| The
Conference Facility of the Caribbean
Built to UN Specifications Located on the picturesque Kingston Waterfront, the Jamaica Conference Centre was built in 1982 as the venue for the preparatory meetings of the International Seabed Authority, an arm of the United Nations. The Centre was built to United Nations specifications and its facilities and services rival the best. The Centre comprises five Conference Rooms, three Caucus Rooms, Delegates Lounges, two Cafeterias, a Private Dining and Reception Area, Document Room, and a Printing Area. Conference Room 1, the main conference room is equipped with an electronic voting system. An observers’ gallery and public and press galleries are located on the first floor. The speaker’s rostrum is elevated and a portable circular stage can be installed for artistic performances. Office facilities, with rooms for press interviews, are located on the ground floor immediately behind the Conference Room. A documents’ distribution booth is also located within the Conference Room. Conference Room 2, is similar to Conference Room 1, with press gallery, offices for secretariat as well as documents’ distribution counter. Both Conference Rooms 1 and 2 open on to the 4400 sq. ft. Harbour Lounge with a magnificent view of Kingston Harbour. Conference Room 3 is a fine reflection of the use of local material in a decorative and functional manner. The bamboo which comprises the ceiling add a warm artistic atmosphere while enhancing the acoustics of the room. Throughout the Centre architectural details made use of indigenous art and craft such as the bamboo ceiling in Conference Room 3. From electronic voting to simultaneous translation facilities for six languages Technical and Support Services All five conference rooms are equipped for simultaneous interpretation of six languages. The layout of each room is appropriately designed in either a semi-circular fashion or in vertical blocks to suit delegations. Regular Service - rental of the facility includes janitorial services, water service for head table, air-conditioning in conference and caucus rooms and normal lighting. Reception Foyer - the Reception Foyer houses an information desk, documents distribution counter, travel service, tour operator as well as post office. Commercial banking service is provided by the Bank of Nova Scotia but this is limited to cashing facilities only. The bank is open during regular hours but this may be extended on request to the Central Bank. Participants who require additional services may visit one of the many commercial banks near to the Centre. Services of a travel agency and the national airline, Air Jamaica can be requested. Local travel to places of interest in Kingston and other areas of the island, can be arranged. Postal services is restricted to the purchase of stamps and mailing of letters. Conference Services - the Conference Services section provides meeting services, interpretation, the recording of meetings and translation, reproduction and distribution of documents. General enquiries regarding meeting services may be directed to the Information Desk. Meeting schedules may be obtained at the Documents Distribution Centre. Printery - 1,640 sq. ft. printery area is available to provide reproduction during conferences. Clinic - A clinic is located on the ground floor of the office building. Facsimile and Cable Services are provided daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Participants wishing to use these services outside of these hours can use the offices of Cable and Wireless (Ja.) Limited at 15 North Street, Kingston. Telephone 876-922-6330-1 or 876-922-6041. Telephone operators are on duty to assist participants with overseas calls. Many of the offices in the Centre are equipped with direct dial telephones. Also, there are a number of public pay telephones for local and international calls. Comprehensive Security is provided on a 24-hour basis by electronic systems and a private security firm. There are guards at the entrance to the Centre and a Security Post within the facility. Regular and specialized services of the city’s police can be arranged on request. Extensive Parking Facilities are provided by 45-bay car park within the complex. Paid parking is available at the 5-storey parking garage, which is connected at the first floor level to the Conference Centre by a pedestrian bridge. The first floor of the garage is reserved for parking by delegates. Dining Facilities- the first floor cafeteria overlooks the Entry Plaza and Reflecting Pool to the north, and the Internal Garden to the south. It has a seating capacity of 250 persons. The ground floor cafeteria, adjacent to the Internal Garden, seats 120 persons. Private dining can be arranged in the Delegates’ Dining Room which is air-conditioned and seats 132 persons. A snack counter is provided in the Harbour Lounge by Conference Rooms 1 and 2. The Jamaica Conference Centre has retained the services of a concessionaire which provides all catering services to the Centre. Exhibition Area Adjoining the upstairs cafeteria is a 2,400 sq. ft. Exhibition Hall with track lighting.
